Dopamine

Writer: Derrick WelshDerrick Welsh

What is with the fascination of social media? I know I’m not quote unquote cool or hip, and yes, when I’m bored I go onto reels to pass the time. My feed is usually propagated with religious quotes, or bible passages.  I use it as a tool. Or, I use it for animals. I love my animals and religious quotes on reels. The animals bring out the softer side in me because how could you not just melt with some of the stuff out there. The bible quotes give me strength and courage to battle the next day with faith. That’s it. Everything else is just laughable out there, I just don’t understand where society is going? What trajectory? Every one wants to be an influencer or a creator. The motivational quotes are the funnest, because you know half of that stuff was made up on the spot. Yet, with some quality sound and video, you can turn a sandwich into a marvel. Is that the difference between content nowadays, just quality of production? Of course the people with more assets are going to produce better content, it’s just how it is. I feel bad for the animals, they are being glorified for views. You don’t know what happens behind closed doors to get that perfect video. I feel like we are in some sort of sideshow or a circus as a humanity. Yes, there are some quality videos with some serious skill portrayed; but, it’s hard to fully like something when it’s kind of just braggy and egotistical. For me, Salt Bae was kind of the first of this trend. Like what is up with glorifying the best of every little situation. It brings in a false narrative that everyone has a price. Even if I could produce quality content, I wouldn’t, because I feel like you are giving up part of your soul on those videos. I’d much rather write and be vulnerable that way. The video is reliant on what people want, whereas half the creators are creating a life that is unobtainable for the bulk of the population. This might be the pragmatic in me, but I feel the modern generation has gone delusional. Don’t get me started on content creation for likes….you would have to have a high quality of production established, original content, understand the zeitgeist, understand what’s popular or not, and be rich and attractive. This will get you started. There is a literal science behind it, just search instagram algorithm. I’m not sure I would want to go down that road if at the end of the day all you are achieving is followers. I understand that there is money and advertising in followers, but come on… you are kind of just selling yourself a bit thick aren’t you? There is probably a dopamine rush when you go viral or get a bunch of likes that makes you feel on top of the world. I mean, probably? I’ve never been. I make content for myself, the stuff that I find funny — there is nothing funnier than satirizing today’s generation because of the misdeeds of the past. Are we at the point in history, where the best content creator survives, because there are no other viable options to be successful? I went the old fashioned route and learned a trade, then joined the military, and then put myself through school. It was brutal. Content creation was never an option for me, but it seems like it is a viable option nowadays and has been for sometime. I just wish that content was moderated a bit more. I spammed pretty hard today to see if I could break insta, I got one warning. I’m not adding anyone because I have officially turned a whole new leaf. This leaf was created with the idea of leading in mind, not following. I just feel that everything becomes a fad or cliche at some point in history. I don’t know when content creation will officially hit this status, but it will come eventually. There will be a new thing out there produced by technology, I’d rather have a more perishable skill. Because, it’s like the hunger games out there in social media land. What is the fascination? Are people just officially blinded? Think of the dopaminergic release cycle, what do you think will be the next technology that brings people in?
